This desk is a larger version of a small vanity table I built a few years ago. I liked the way it (the vanity) turned out, and I wanted it see if the same sort of lines would work on a slightly larger scale. I was excited to see if just a few separate elements - the rounded legs, the banded top, the wood itself - would come together as a whole. I genuinely had no idea if they would or not. This piece was an experiment for me. I hadn’t ever used Black Limba in a large piece before. I almost always make a full-scale mockup before building the actual piece; for a number of reasons (chief among them being time, or lack thereof), that just wasn’t possible this go-around. I think I have a tendency to sort of worry things into existence. That said, I think there is something intense and freeing and nerve-wracking about working on the fly, about building by sketching.
